Cellphones are a very controversial topic. I never realized how toxic phones can be until I found out about my screen time. In the last week, I have spent five hours on my phone daily on average. I have spent 8.5 hours on snapchat, 8 hours on instagram, and 4 hours on youtube in the last seven days alone. However, this past week has been very busy for me. I was on a retreat from Friday to Sunday so My phone usage is down 46% from what it was last week. Meaning last week I spent roughly 9 or 10 hours on my phone. This is what I mean by toxic. I have received over 1,000 notifications on snapchat alone. I have over 1,000 followers on instagram, but I find myself feeling alone. Why? Because my generation spends their time looking down, texting on group chats instead of hanging out in groups, and worrying about what the internet thinks of their actions. I hate my phone because it takes away my time.
At school, I use my cellphone to escape. I escape from awkward situations where I don’t know anybody, when I get mad, or when I don’t want to deal with my teacher. I also get on it accidentally and 10 minutes later I realize I missed a whole page of notes. I believe that teachers need to put breaks in the notes to help with kid’s attention spans. Kids can have a few minutes to check their phone and respond to friends and then focus back in on the teacher.
